Is this training right for you?

P3O Foundation training is designed for people who need a structured introduction to portfolio, programme and project offices and want to understand the models, roles, services and governance that help organisations support change and decision-making.

  • PMO analysts, administrators and coordinators

  • Project and programme professionals who work with a PMO

  • Portfolio professionals and governance support staff

  • Managers who need to understand how P3O supports decision-making

  • Consultants and other professionals who work in or alongside P3O environments

No. There is no formal prerequisite for Foundation. The training starts with the core P3O concepts and is suitable for learners who are new to the guidance.

It can be. Foundation is useful if your role requires you to understand P3O terminology, models, roles and services or contribute effectively within a P3O environment. If you need to apply the guidance to design or improve a P3O, Practitioner is the next level.

If you do not hold P3O Foundation and already know you want to reach Practitioner level, the combined route is more direct than arranging the two levels separately.

See P3O Foundation and Practitioner training if you want both levels in one programme.

What you’ll walk away with

By the end of P3O Foundation training, you should be able to explain the purpose and value of P3O, describe different P3O models, recognise key roles and responsibilities, understand how a P3O is implemented and operated, and discuss how governance, services, tools and techniques support organisational decision-making.

You will walk away with the ability to:

  • Explain the purpose and main elements of P3O

  • Describe why organisations establish P3O structures

  • Recognise different P3O models and how they can be tailored

  • Explain the lifecycle for implementing and re-energising a P3O

  • Describe key P3O roles, services, tools and techniques

  • Use a shared P3O language with portfolio, programme and project colleagues

The exam, demystified

The exam is designed to test your understanding of the guidance, but candidates often have practical questions about what it covers, how to prepare, when results are issued, and what happens if they do not pass first time.

The exam tests your knowledge and understanding across the P3O syllabus, including the P3O overview, business justification, models and tailoring, implementation, operating tools and techniques, and roles.

Work through the full Foundation training, use the official digital P3O manual alongside your learning, and complete the exam preparation and practice questions so that you are familiar with the terminology and pace required for a 60-minute paper.

Foundation results are available the same day. Results and certificates are managed through your PeopleCert account, and successful candidates receive their P3O Foundation certificate and digital badge.

P3O Foundation certification is current for three years from the date it is awarded. PeopleCert provides renewal routes if you want to keep the certification shown as current after that period.

A free PeopleCert Take2 resit is included. If you do not pass your first attempt, Take2 gives you one additional attempt at no extra cost, to be used within six months of the original exam date.

Foundation is the prerequisite for Practitioner. Practitioner builds on the same subject areas but asks you to apply and analyse P3O guidance in realistic organisational situations, including model selection, business justification and implementation decisions.
