AIPGF courses frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Should I take AIPGF Foundation, Practitioner, or both - and in what order?

Start with AIPGF Foundation if you are new to AI project governance; move to AIPGF Practitioner once you hold the Foundation certificate and want to apply the framework in practice.

The two qualifications are designed to be taken in sequence, and the AIPGF Practitioner course has a formal prerequisite: you must hold the AIPGF Foundation certificate (or an accepted equivalent) before you can sit the Practitioner exam.

Which level is right for you?

  • AIPGF Foundation (3 days) – suited to anyone new to the AI Project Governance Framework who needs a structured introduction to its principles, lifecycle, roles, and maturity model. No prerequisites are required. The Foundation certificate is valid for life.
  • AIPGF Practitioner (1 day) – suited to professionals who already hold the Foundation certificate and need to apply AIPGF to real or simulated project and programme scenarios. The Practitioner certificate is also valid for life with no renewal requirement.

Should you take them combined?

If you are confident you want to reach Practitioner level, booking the Foundation and Practitioner courses together is a practical route. Doing so means you progress directly from conceptual understanding to applied practice without a gap, and you sit both exams in a single training period. Both courses are delivered instructor-led via live online sessions through Knowledge Train, which is accredited by APMG International.

If you are unsure whether you need Practitioner level, completing Foundation first lets you assess whether the applied qualification is relevant to your role before committing further. Foundation is also a prerequisite for the Practitioner.

Do I need AIPGF Foundation before I can take Practitioner?

Yes – the AIPGF Practitioner course requires the AIPGF Foundation certificate, or equivalent knowledge, as a prerequisite.

The AI Project Governance Framework (AIPGF) is a two-level qualification accredited by APMG International. The Foundation level introduces the core concepts, principles, lifecycle stages, roles, and maturity model. The Practitioner level builds directly on that knowledge, asking candidates to apply the Framework to realistic project and programme scenarios rather than simply recall it.

Because the Practitioner course and exam assume a solid grounding in AIPGF concepts, APMG International requires candidates to hold the AIPGF Foundation certificate before sitting the Practitioner exam. If you have equivalent prior knowledge – for example, through self-study of the official AIPGF material – this may also be accepted, but you should confirm this with your training provider before booking.

In practical terms, this means most learners follow a two-stage path:

  1. Complete the AIPGF Foundation course (3 days, instructor-led) and pass the Foundation exam.
  2. Progress to the AIPGF Practitioner course (1 day, instructor-led) and sit the Practitioner exam.

Both the Foundation and Practitioner certificates are valid for life and do not expire, so there is no time pressure to progress from one level to the other.

What's the difference between the AIPGF exam at Foundation and Practitioner level?

The AIPGF Foundation and Practitioner exams differ significantly in format, duration, difficulty, and prerequisites, reflecting the shift from testing knowledge to testing applied judgement.

AIPGF Foundation exam

  • Format: Multiple choice
  • Questions: 40 questions
  • Pass mark: 50% (20 correct answers)
  • Duration: 40 minutes
  • Materials allowed: Closed book
  • Prerequisites: None
  • Results: Same day

AIPGF Practitioner exam

  • Format: Complex multiple choice
  • Questions: 4 questions, each worth 20 marks (80 marks available in total)
  • Pass mark: 50% (40 out of 80 marks)
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Materials allowed: Closed book
  • Prerequisites: AIPGF Foundation certificate
  • Results: Same day

The Foundation exam tests whether candidates understand core AIPGF concepts, principles, and terminology. The Practitioner exam uses a more complex question format that requires candidates to apply the AI Project Governance Framework to realistic project and programme scenarios – it demands higher-order thinking, not just recall.

Both exams are delivered online and are accredited by APMG International. If a candidate fails either exam and wishes to resit, an additional resit fee applies. Both the AIPGF Foundation and Practitioner certificates are valid for life and do not expire.

How long is AIPGF Foundation and Practitioner valid for, and do I need to renew?

Both the AIPGF Foundation certificate and the AIPGF Practitioner certificate are valid for life and do not expire.

The AI Project Governance Framework (AIPGF) is accredited by APMG International, and unlike some other APMG-accredited qualifications – such as AgilePM or Change Management, which carry a five-year Registered Practitioner status – AIPGF has no renewal requirement, no re-registration exam, and no expiry date at either level.

  • AIPGF Foundation certificate – valid for life, no renewal needed.
  • AIPGF Practitioner certificate – valid for life, no renewal needed, and there is no Registered Practitioner status associated with this qualification.

Once you pass the relevant APMG exam, you can access your digital certificate and badge through the APMG Candidate Portal, which is also linked to a Credly account for sharing your credentials. Provisional results are typically available immediately after the exam, with official results and a marks breakdown published in the Candidate Portal within two working days.

This means that once you have achieved AIPGF certification, there is no ongoing administrative burden to maintain the qualification – making it a low-maintenance addition to your professional credentials.

How long are the AIPGF Foundation and Practitioner courses?

The AIPGF Foundation course runs over 3 days, while the AIPGF Practitioner course takes 1 day – giving a combined duration of 4 days if you progress through both levels.

Both courses are delivered as instructor-led, live online sessions with a scheduled start date, so the time commitment is structured rather than self-directed. Here is a quick breakdown:

  • AIPGF Foundation: 3 days of instructor-led training, including structured teaching, discussion, case-based exercises, and exam preparation. The Foundation exam (40 minutes, multiple choice) is included and taken on the final day.
  • AIPGF Practitioner: 1 day of instructor-led training, focused on applying the AI Project Governance Framework (AIPGF) to realistic scenarios. The Practitioner exam (2 hours, complex multiple choice) is included. The AIPGF Foundation certificate is a prerequisite.

Both courses are accredited by APMG International. Exam preparation is built into the course schedule, so no separate exam sitting needs to be arranged. Post-course, you also have access to course resources for up to 1 year, and tutor support by email is available for up to 3 months after the course ends.

For teams, both courses can be delivered privately to groups, which allows scheduling on dates that suit your organisation.

Do I need AIPGF Foundation before taking the Practitioner course?

Yes – the AIPGF Practitioner course and exam require candidates to hold the AIPGF Foundation certificate as a prerequisite, or to demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

The AI Project Governance Framework (AIPGF) is a two-level qualification accredited by APMG International. The Foundation level is designed to establish a solid theoretical understanding of AIPGF concepts, principles, lifecycle stages, and governance roles. The Practitioner level then builds directly on that knowledge by requiring candidates to apply the Framework to realistic project and programme scenarios.

Attempting the Practitioner level without Foundation-level knowledge would put you at a significant disadvantage, because the Practitioner exam assumes familiarity with:

  • AIPGF principles, values and lifecycle stages
  • Governance roles and accountability structures
  • The AIPGF maturity model

If you already have equivalent knowledge of the AIPGF Framework through prior study or experience, it may be worth checking with the training provider or APMG International whether that qualifies as an acceptable alternative to the Foundation certificate.

For most candidates, the recommended path is to complete the AIPGF Foundation course (3 days) before progressing to the AIPGF Practitioner course (1 day). Both qualifications are valid for life once awarded and do not expire or require renewal.

Is AIPGF Practitioner worth it if I already have Foundation?

Yes – the AIPGF Practitioner course is worth doing after Foundation if you need to apply the AI Project Governance Framework in real project and programme work, not just understand its concepts.

The AIPGF Foundation course gives you a theoretical grounding in the Framework: its principles, values, lifecycle stages, governance roles, and maturity model. The AIPGF Practitioner course builds directly on this by asking you to apply that knowledge to realistic AI governance scenarios. The shift is from knowing AIPGF to using it.

Practitioner is particularly valuable if you:

  • Work in a portfolio, programme, or project delivery role where you must make AI-related governance decisions
  • Are responsible for oversight of AI-enabled change as a governance, risk, or compliance professional
  • Want to demonstrate Practitioner-level competence to employers or clients
  • Need to embed AIPGF alongside your organisation’s existing project and programme methods

The Practitioner certificate is accredited by APMG International and – unlike some other APMG qualifications – is valid for life with no re-registration or renewal requirement. The course itself is one day of instructor-led training, making the time commitment modest relative to the credential gained.

If your role is primarily observational or advisory rather than hands-on AI project governance, Foundation alone may be sufficient.
