Is this the right next step for you?

Change Management Practitioner course is designed for Foundation certificate holders who now need to use the knowledge in context. It suits people who make, influence or support decisions about how organisational change should be planned and implemented.

  • Change managers and change practitioners

  • Project and programme managers working on change initiatives

  • HR, organisational development and learning professionals

  • Business analysts and consultants

  • Managers, leaders and sponsors responsible for implementing change

You must hold the Foundation certificate before you can sit the Change Management Practitioner exam. Existing professional experience does not replace this prerequisite.

Choose the combined Foundation and Practitioner course. It takes you through Foundation first and then Practitioner, with both exams included.

Foundation checks whether you know and understand the core concepts. Change Management Practitioner asks you to use that knowledge in a scenario, assess what is happening and select actions that fit the context.

What you’ll walk away with

Change Management Practitioner course develops your ability to apply the Foundation syllabus in context. You will work with realistic scenarios and make decisions about organisational context, people, leadership, stakeholders, communication and the work needed to implement and sustain change.

You will walk away with the ability to:

  • Analyse the context of a change initiative and select suitable approaches

  • Apply change management concepts to realistic organisational scenarios

  • Recommend ways to build and sustain momentum

  • Plan how people should be supported through learning, coaching and communication

  • Respond appropriately to resistance, conflict and stakeholder concerns

  • Use facilitation and collaborative techniques to support change

  • Social neuroscience and what it can tell us about reactions to change

At Practitioner level, you apply your Foundation understanding of change leadership and teams to the scenario rather than simply recalling definitions.

  • The roles of sponsors, line leaders, change agents and change managers
  • Leadership demands created by organisational change
  • Building, leading and maintaining effective change teams
  • Supporting collaboration and effective teamwork through change

The exam, demystified

The Practitioner exam is more application-focused, so candidates often want to understand how the scenario-based questions work, how to prepare effectively, what materials can be used, and what happens after the exam. This section covers those points in more detail.

Foundation is primarily about knowledge and understanding. Change Management Practitioner is about application. The open-book format does not remove the need to know the material, because the main challenge is deciding how the ideas apply to the scenario.

Complete the Change Management Practitioner learning, practise with scenario-based questions, become familiar with where key material sits in the study guide, and use mock exams to improve both decision-making and time management.

Passing the Change Management Practitioner exam gives you APMG Change Management Registered Practitioner status. This is the status used to recognise current Practitioner-level certification.

Registered Practitioner status is current for 5 years. To maintain that status, APMG requires candidates to pass the Change Management Re-Registration exam between years 3 and 5.

Your Practitioner certificate remains part of your record, but your Registered Practitioner status lapses. To regain Registered status after the 5-year period, APMG requires the full Change Management Practitioner exam to be retaken.

You can take another attempt, but a free resit is not included in the Change Management Practitioner course. An additional exam fee applies.

Provisional results are normally available immediately after the online exam, with official results confirmed through the APMG Candidate Portal.
