Which BCS Business Analysis course should you choose?

BCS Business Analysis is modular, so choosing a course is less about moving through a simple Foundation-to-Practitioner ladder and more about deciding what you need from your training. You can begin with the Foundation Certificate if you want a broad grounding in business analysis, or go directly to a practitioner module if you already know which area of practice you want to strengthen.

The practitioner modules focus on different parts of the business analyst role. Business Analysis Practice develops techniques for investigating business situations, understanding stakeholder perspectives, defining target states, evaluating options and building business cases. Requirements Engineering focuses on eliciting, analysing, documenting, validating and managing requirements. Modelling Business Processes focuses on understanding how work is performed, modelling processes clearly and identifying opportunities for improvement.

If your longer-term objective is the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis, you can also follow a structured four-module pathway. Knowledge Train offers the two core modules together with a qualifying knowledge-based module and practitioner module, giving you one complete route to the module requirements before the final BCS oral assessment. Use the options alongside to compare the purpose of each course and choose according to your current role, skills gap or qualification goal.

Choose Foundation if you want a broad introduction to business analysis. It covers the role of the business analyst, strategic context, investigation, stakeholders, business processes, business cases and requirements. No previous business analysis experience is required.

Choose Business Analysis Practice if you want practical techniques for analysing a business situation, engaging stakeholders, defining target states, evaluating options and developing business cases. It is one of the two core modules required for the International Diploma.

Choose Requirements Engineering if your work involves eliciting, analysing, documenting, validating, prioritising or managing requirements. It is the second core module required for the International Diploma.

Choose Modelling Business Processes if you need to understand, model and improve how work flows through an organisation. This module can fulfil the practitioner-module requirement within the International Diploma route.

Choose the Diploma pathway if you want to complete the four Knowledge Train modules that form one valid route towards the BCS International Diploma. The final BCS oral assessment is booked separately with BCS.

The BCS International Diploma is a composite qualification. Before taking the final oral assessment, candidates must pass two core modules, one knowledge-based module and one practitioner module.

BCS Business Analysis certifications and qualifications

BCS Business Analysis offers individual certificates for specific areas of knowledge and practice, as well as the broader BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis. The right route depends on whether you want to certify one particular capability or build towards the wider Diploma qualification.

Each Knowledge Train module course leads to its own BCS assessment. When you pass that assessment, BCS awards the corresponding certificate. These certificates can stand alone as recognised evidence of your knowledge in that area, and some also form part of the module requirements for the International Diploma.

The International Diploma works differently from an individual certificate. It is not achieved by taking one Diploma course or passing one written exam. You first need a qualifying combination of four BCS module certificates: the two required core modules, one knowledge-based module and one practitioner module. You then take a separate final oral assessment with BCS.

Knowledge Train's four-module pathway provides one valid combination towards the Diploma: Business Analysis Practice and Requirements Engineering as the two core modules, the Foundation Certificate in Business Analysis as the knowledge-based module, and Modelling Business Processes as the practitioner module. BCS also accepts other qualifying knowledge-based and practitioner modules.

Knowledge Train is accredited by BCS to deliver training for the four modules we offer and to arrange their module exams on behalf of learners. The final International Diploma oral assessment is booked and paid for directly with BCS, and preparation specifically for that oral assessment is not included in Knowledge Train training.

About BCS certification and qualifications

Knowledge Train offers training and exams for the BCS Foundation Certificate in Business Analysis, BCS Practitioner Certificate in Business Analysis Practice, BCS Practitioner Certificate in Requirements Engineering, and BCS Practitioner Certificate in Modelling Business Processes. Each certificate is awarded by BCS after you pass the relevant module assessment.

An individual BCS certificate relates to one module and is awarded after you pass that module assessment. The BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis is a broader qualification. To achieve it, you need the required combination of four qualifying module certificates and must then pass the separate final BCS oral assessment.

No. The BCS Foundation Certificate in Business Analysis is not a prerequisite for Business Analysis Practice, Requirements Engineering or Modelling Business Processes. You can take a practitioner module directly if it matches the capability you want to develop.

The Diploma requires Business Analysis Practice and Requirements Engineering as the two core modules, plus one qualifying knowledge-based module and one qualifying practitioner module. Knowledge Train uses the Foundation Certificate in Business Analysis for the knowledge-based requirement and Modelling Business Processes for the practitioner requirement.

If you want a broad introduction to business analysis, start with the BCS Foundation Certificate in Business Analysis. If you already know that you need a specialist capability, you can take Business Analysis Practice, Requirements Engineering or Modelling Business Processes directly because Foundation is not a prerequisite for those modules.

No. The BCS Business Analysis practitioner modules available from Knowledge Train do not require the Foundation certificate. Choose the module that best matches the capability you need.
