Is this course right for you?

Change Management Foundation course is designed for people who need a structured introduction to organisational change and want to understand the people, leadership, stakeholder and organisational factors that influence whether change succeeds.

  • Current or aspiring change professionals

  • Project and programme professionals involved in change initiatives

  • HR, organisational development and learning professionals

  • Managers and team leaders supporting change

  • Business analysts, consultants and other professionals who regularly contribute to change

No. APMG sets no prerequisite for Foundation. The course starts with the core concepts and is suitable for learners who are new to the APMG approach.

It can be. Foundation is useful if your role requires you to understand and contribute to change rather than lead complex application decisions. If you want to demonstrate applied capability, Practitioner is the right level.

If you do not hold Change Management Foundation and want to reach Practitioner level, the combined course is more direct than booking the two courses separately.

See the Foundation and Practitioner course if you want both levels in one course.

What you’ll walk away with

By the end of the Change Management Foundation course, you should be able to discuss the context for a change initiative, recognise how people may respond, distinguish resistance from legitimate concerns, support change leadership and teams, contribute to stakeholder engagement and communication, and discuss change impact and progress.

You will walk away with the ability to:

  • Explain the main factors that influence organisational change

  • Recognise how people may respond to change and what support they may need

  • Describe the roles of leaders, sponsors and change agents

  • Contribute to stakeholder engagement and communication planning

  • Assess change impact, readiness and progress

  • Use a shared change management language with colleagues and stakeholders

The exam, demystified

The exam itself is straightforward, but candidates often have practical questions about what it tests, how to prepare, when results are issued, and what happens if they do not pass first time. This section covers those points in more detail.

The Change Management Foundation exam tests your understanding of the five syllabus areas: organisational context and approach, people and change, change leadership and teams, stakeholders and communication, and the work of the change manager.

Work through the full Change Management Foundation course, use the official study guide alongside your learning, and complete the mock exams and practice questions so that you are familiar with the terminology and the pace required for a 40-minute paper.

Provisional results are normally available immediately after the online Foundation exam. Official results are then confirmed through the APMG Candidate Portal. After a pass is confirmed, the Change Management Foundation certificate is awarded by APMG International.

The Change Management Foundation certificate does not expire. You can use it later as the prerequisite for Practitioner without a time limit.

You can retake the Foundation exam, but the Knowledge Train package does not include a free resit. An additional exam fee applies for another attempt.

Change Management Foundation is the prerequisite for Practitioner. Practitioner builds on the same syllabus but asks you to apply the ideas to realistic scenarios and adds further areas such as sustaining momentum, learning, coaching, conflict and facilitation.
