FAQs
Do I need any previous experience or prerequisites to study the AIPGF Foundation course?
No previous experience or formal prerequisites are required to study the AI Project Governance Framework (AIPGF) Foundation course. The course is designed as an accessible entry point into AI project governance, and anyone can enrol regardless of their background.
The AIPGF Foundation is well suited to a range of professionals, including:
- Portfolio, programme, and project roles involved in overseeing AI-enabled change
- Professionals who want a solid theoretical understanding of the AIPGF before applying it in practice
- Individuals planning to progress to the AIPGF Practitioner certificate, for which the Foundation certificate is a prerequisite
While no prior knowledge of the AIPGF is needed, a general familiarity with project or programme management will help you make sense of the governance structures and lifecycle concepts covered in the course. The curriculum starts from first principles, covering the purpose and scope of the Framework, its principles and values, lifecycle stages, governance roles, and the AIPGF maturity model.
The Foundation exam – a closed-book, 40-question multiple-choice paper with a 50% pass mark – is included in the course and sits at the end of the three-day programme. APMG International, which accredits the AIPGF qualification, confirms that the Foundation certificate has no expiry date once awarded.
How do I take the AIPGF Foundation exam?
The AIPGF Foundation exam is taken online at the end of the three-day course, with the exam included in the course fee.
The exam is set and awarded by APMG International, the accreditation body for the AI Project Governance Framework (AIPGF). Here is what to expect:
- Format: Multiple choice
- Questions: 40
- Pass mark: 50% (20 correct answers)
- Duration: 40 minutes
- Materials allowed: Closed book – no notes or materials permitted
- Prerequisites: None
- Delivery: Online
- Results: Provisional results are available on the same day
To sit the exam, you register for a free APMG Candidate Portal account. This is where you book your exam, view your official results and marks breakdown (typically within two working days), and claim your digital badge and electronic certificate via a linked Credly account.
The AIPGF Foundation certificate is valid for life and does not expire. Exam preparation – including mock exams and the official manual – is built into the Knowledge Train instructor-led course, so no additional materials are needed before sitting.
When will I receive my AIPGF Foundation exam results and certificate?
You will receive a provisional result immediately after completing the AIPGF Foundation exam, with your official result and certificate available within a short period through the APMG Candidate Portal.
The AIPGF Foundation exam is delivered online and marked automatically. Here is the typical timeline:
- Provisional result: Available immediately after most APMG online exams, so you will know whether you have passed on the same day.
- Official result and marks breakdown: Published in your APMG Candidate Portal, typically within two working days of the exam.
- Digital certificate and badge: Once the official result is issued, you can claim your digital certificate and a digital badge via your linked Credly account, usually within two business days of the result being published.
To access your results and certificate, you will need a free APMG Candidate Portal account. Every candidate registers for this account as part of the exam booking process – it is also where you book your exam, view your marks breakdown, and download your certificate.
The AIPGF Foundation certificate, awarded by APMG International, is valid for life and does not expire, so there is no renewal or re-registration requirement at Foundation level.
Is AIPGF Foundation hard to pass?
The AIPGF Foundation exam is designed to be achievable for candidates who engage fully with the course material, with a pass mark of just 50% (20 out of 40 questions correct).
The exam format is straightforward by design:
- Format: Multiple choice, closed book
- Questions: 40
- Pass mark: 50% (20 correct answers)
- Duration: 40 minutes
- Results: Available the same day
Because the AIPGF Foundation exam tests theoretical understanding rather than practical application, candidates are assessed on their knowledge of core concepts – such as AIPGF principles and values, lifecycle stages, governance roles, and the maturity model – rather than their ability to apply the framework to complex scenarios. That applied level is assessed at AIPGF Practitioner instead.
The Knowledge Train AIPGF Foundation course includes the exam as part of the fee, along with an official manual and mock exams, which are particularly useful for familiarising yourself with the question style before sitting the real assessment. Tutor support is also available by email during the course and for up to three months afterwards.
Candidates with no prior experience of AI project governance are well catered for – there are no prerequisites for the AIPGF Foundation, and the three-day instructor-led course is structured to build knowledge progressively from the ground up.
Can I retake the AIPGF Foundation exam if I fail, and does it cost extra?
Yes, you can resit the AIPGF Foundation exam if you fail, but an additional exam resit fee applies.
The AIPGF Foundation exam is included in the course fee for your first attempt. If you do not achieve the pass mark of 50% (20 correct answers out of 40 multiple-choice questions), you are eligible to resit, but you will need to pay a separate resit fee to book another attempt. The exam is taken online, and provisional results are available on the same day, so you will know quickly whether a resit is needed.
A few practical points worth knowing before you sit:
- The exam is closed book and lasts 40 minutes, with 40 multiple-choice questions.
- There are no prerequisites for the AIPGF Foundation exam, so prior certification is not required.
- The course includes mock exams and an official AIPGF manual to help you prepare, which reduces the likelihood of needing a resit.
- Once you pass, the AIPGF Foundation certificate is valid for life and does not expire, as confirmed by the accreditation body APMG International.
If exam confidence is a concern, making full use of the mock exams and live trainer sessions included in the Knowledge Train course is the most effective way to prepare for your first attempt.
