FAQs

Do I need any previous experience or prerequisites to study the P3O Practitioner course?

The only formal prerequisite for the P3O Practitioner course is a valid P3O Foundation certificate, issued by PeopleCert. No prior work experience in a specific role is required beyond holding that Foundation-level qualification.

Why the P3O Foundation is required

The P3O Practitioner course builds directly on the concepts introduced at Foundation level. The Practitioner exam applies P3O knowledge to scenario-based questions, so candidates who have not studied or passed the Foundation are unlikely to have the grounding needed to succeed at Practitioner level. PeopleCert verifies that a candidate holds the required prerequisite before releasing Practitioner exam results.

Who this course is typically aimed at

  • P3O Foundation certificate holders who want to progress to Practitioner level
  • PMO managers, analysts, and team members looking to apply P3O in practice
  • Project, programme, and portfolio managers who work alongside PMOs
  • Change and governance professionals who support delivery teams
  • Anyone planning to design, implement, or improve a P3O model in their organisation

No Foundation yet?

If you have not yet achieved the P3O Foundation, Knowledge Train offers a P3O combined course that covers both Foundation and Practitioner in a single four-day programme. Both exams are included, and the official digital manual is provided – making it the most efficient route if you are starting from scratch.

How do I take the P3O Practitioner exam?

The P3O Practitioner exam is taken online through your PeopleCert account, and it is included as part of the Knowledge Train P3O Practitioner course.

Here is what to expect from the exam format:

  • Format: Objective-style questions based on a case study scenario
  • Questions: 80 questions
  • Pass mark: 50% (40 out of 80 correct answers)
  • Duration: 150 minutes (2.5 hours)
  • Open book: Yes – you may refer to your materials during the exam
  • Results: Confirmed within 3 working days
  • Prerequisite: You must hold the P3O Foundation certificate before sitting the Practitioner exam. PeopleCert verifies this before releasing your results.

The exam is accessed online via your PeopleCert account. Every candidate needs a free PeopleCert membership account to register for exams and manage their certification record.

The Knowledge Train P3O Practitioner course includes the exam fee and a free resit (known as Take2 through PeopleCert), which gives you one additional attempt at no extra cost if you do not pass first time. The resit must be used within six months of your original exam date.

The course also includes a one-year PeopleCert Plus membership, which provides access to mock exams, sample papers, and other revision resources to help you prepare.

When will I receive my P3O Practitioner exam results and certificate?

P3O Practitioner exam results are typically available within 3 working days of sitting the exam, after which your certificate and digital badge are issued through your PeopleCert account.

Because the P3O Practitioner is an advanced qualification, PeopleCert verifies that each candidate holds the required prerequisite – a valid P3O Foundation certificate – before releasing Practitioner results. This verification step is the reason Practitioner results take up to 3 working days, rather than being available on the same day as the Foundation exam.

Once your results are confirmed and your certificate is issued, you can access the following through your PeopleCert membership account:

  • Your official P3O Practitioner certificate
  • A digital badge you can share on professional profiles such as LinkedIn
  • A permanent record of your achievement on the PeopleCert Candidate Verification Service

The P3O Practitioner certification is valid for three years from the date it is awarded. To keep it current, you can renew by retaking the exam, passing another certification within the same PeopleCert Product Portfolio (which includes PRINCE2, MSP, MoP, and MoR), or by accumulating CPD points annually if you hold a paid PeopleCert Plus membership.

The P3O Practitioner course at Knowledge Train includes a 1-year PeopleCert Plus membership, which gives you access to a free exam resit (Take2) and the CPD renewal route.

Is P3O Practitioner hard to pass?

The P3O Practitioner exam is challenging but passable with structured preparation, and it is designed to test applied knowledge rather than simple recall.

Unlike the P3O Foundation exam, which is a closed-book multiple-choice test, the P3O Practitioner exam is scenario-based and open book. Candidates have 150 minutes to answer 80 objective-style questions, all drawn from a case study. The pass mark is 50% (40 out of 80 correct answers). The open-book format means you can refer to the P3O guidance during the exam, but the questions are designed to require analysis and judgement rather than simple look-up answers.

The main difficulty for most candidates lies in applying P3O concepts – such as designing an appropriate P3O model, building a business case, or defining roles and governance structures – to an unfamiliar scenario under time pressure. Candidates who have already worked in a PMO environment or who hold related qualifications such as PRINCE2 or MSP tend to find the contextual reasoning more intuitive.

To support exam readiness, the Knowledge Train P3O Practitioner course includes mock exam practice and is delivered by accredited trainers. A free exam resit (Take2) is also included in the course package, giving candidates an additional attempt at no extra cost if needed. Knowledge Train reports a 100% pass rate on this course, though candidates are still encouraged to engage fully with the practice materials.

Can I retake the P3O Practitioner exam if I fail, and does it cost extra?

A free exam resit is included as standard with the P3O Practitioner course at Knowledge Train, so there is no additional cost if you need a second attempt.

The resit is provided through PeopleCert’s Take2 programme, which gives candidates one additional attempt at the same exam if the first attempt is unsuccessful. Key details to be aware of:

  • The free resit is included in the all-inclusive course price – no separate purchase is needed.
  • The Take2 resit must be used within six months of the original exam date.
  • The resit covers the same P3O Practitioner exam format: 80 scenario-based questions, 150 minutes, open book, with a pass mark of 50% (40 out of 80).
  • Candidates also receive a one-year PeopleCert Plus membership as part of the course, which provides access to mock exams and sample papers to support exam preparation.

If you are concerned about passing first time, it is worth using the mock exams and post-course tutor support, which is available by email for up to three months after the course ends. Knowledge Train reports a 100% pass rate for this course, which suggests that most candidates do not need to use the free resit at all – but it is there as a practical safety net if you do.
