What is DevOps?
DevOps defined
It can be difficult to find a DevOps definition anywhere. However, DevOps is a culture which aims to improve the flow of work when developing software or IT solutions.
Brings together Dev and Ops
As its name suggests, DevOps works by combining the normally disparate and dysfunctional software development and IT operations departments. Combining the two enables better collaboration, meaning software or IT solutions can be delivered rapidly and at a better standard of quality. This in turn delivers a better business service for the customer.
Automation
Derived from Agile philosophies, DevOps achieves such high-quality and speed with a set of practices designed to establish better collaboration and communication between teams. The product being developed undergoes continuous monitoring, testing and deployment using a high level of automation using tools such as Puppet, Chef and Jenkins.
Continuous feedback
Feedback is also continuous between all parties involved, meaning the team can always allow for improvements and the customer’s needs.
Culture
DevOps requires organisations to break old habits and change their entire culture. However, because of its focus on continuous delivery, DevOps is also very powerful when used alongside agile, lean or ITIL methods.
