P3O courses frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Do I need previous PMO experience to take a P3O course?

No previous PMO work experience is required for P3O Foundation. The course introduces P3O from the beginning and has no formal prerequisites.

Foundation is suitable for people who work in or alongside portfolio, programme, or project offices, as well as professionals who want to formalise their knowledge of how these support structures work. This includes PMO staff, project, programme and portfolio professionals, and people involved in governance or assurance.

For Practitioner, you must hold P3O Foundation, but the existing course requirements do not specify a particular job role or amount of PMO work experience. Practitioner is aimed at people who want to apply P3O guidance in practice, including those designing, implementing, managing, or improving P3O structures.

Why do I need P3O Foundation before taking Practitioner?

P3O Practitioner builds directly on the concepts introduced at Foundation level. Foundation establishes your knowledge of P3O terminology, structures, roles, services, and principles, while Practitioner requires you to apply that knowledge to organisational scenarios.

For this reason, P3O Foundation is a formal prerequisite for Practitioner. PeopleCert verifies that candidates hold the required Foundation qualification before releasing Practitioner exam results.

If you do not yet hold Foundation, you can either take Foundation first and Practitioner later or take the combined four-day course covering both levels.

Should I take Foundation and Practitioner separately or choose the combined course?

Both routes cover the same Foundation and Practitioner levels. The main difference is how you want to organise your training.

Taking Foundation first and Practitioner later can suit you if you want to spread your study, gain Foundation before deciding whether you need Practitioner, or complete the two levels at different times.

The combined course is designed for learners starting without P3O certification who already know they want to progress to Practitioner. It covers both levels in one four-day programme and includes both exams.

The official digital manual is included with Foundation and the combined course, but not with the standalone Practitioner course.

Is P3O Practitioner worth taking if I already have Foundation?

Practitioner is useful if your role requires you to move beyond understanding P3O and apply the guidance in practice.

Foundation demonstrates knowledge of the framework. Practitioner develops your ability to work with realistic organisational situations, including developing a P3O business case, selecting and tailoring a model, defining roles and services, considering governance arrangements, and planning implementation.

It is particularly relevant if you manage or improve a PMO, contribute to governance or assurance, need to justify a P3O initiative, or want to apply P3O guidance to organisational decision-making.

How difficult are the P3O Foundation and Practitioner exams?

Foundation and Practitioner present different challenges.

The Foundation exam tests your understanding of P3O concepts, terminology, roles, structures, and services. It is multiple choice and closed book, so the emphasis is on understanding and recognising the guidance rather than applying it to complex scenarios.

Practitioner is more demanding because it requires you to apply P3O guidance to a case-study scenario. Although the exam is open book, the questions require analysis and judgement rather than simply finding information in the guidance. Typical challenges include selecting an appropriate P3O model, considering a business case, and applying roles and governance arrangements to an unfamiliar situation.

Your course includes exam preparation and practice materials, and a free Take2 resit is included if you need a second attempt.

How will the course help me prepare for the P3O exam?

Exam preparation is built into the training rather than being left entirely to independent study.

Foundation training covers the knowledge required for the Foundation syllabus and includes exam preparation. Practitioner training includes practice applying P3O guidance and sample questions so that you become familiar with the type of judgement required in the scenario-based exam.

You also receive a one-year PeopleCert Plus membership, which provides access to resources including mock exams and sample papers.

What materials and support are included with P3O training?

All P3O courses include course materials, live tuition from an accredited trainer, exam preparation, the relevant PeopleCert exam, a free Take2 exam resit, and one-year PeopleCert Plus membership.

You also have access to post-course learning resources for one year and email tutor support after your instructor-led course. The existing Practitioner material specifies post-course email tutor support for up to three months.

The official digital P3O manual is included with Foundation and the combined course. It is not included with the standalone Practitioner course.

PeopleCert Plus provides additional exam-preparation resources including mock exams and sample papers.

Is the official P3O manual included with my course?

The official digital P3O manual is included with the P3O Foundation course and with the combined Foundation and Practitioner course.

It is not included with the standalone P3O Practitioner course.

This distinction is also shown in the course comparison table so you can see what is included before booking.
