ITIL is owned by AXELOS, which also owns other best practice frameworks such as PRINCE2 and Managing Successful Programmes.
There are 4 ITIL certificate levels within the ITIL 4 scheme.
ITIL 4 Foundation level
ITIL 4 Foundation certification introduces ITIL 4. It enables candidates to look at IT service management through an end-to-end operating model so they may create, deliver, and continually improve tech-enabled products.
ITIL 4 Managing Professional
ITIL 4 Managing Professional (MP) certification stream provides practical and technical knowledge on running successful IT-enabled services, teams, and workflows. It is aimed at IT practitioners working within technology and digital teams across businesses.
ITIL 4 Strategic Leader
ITIL 4 Strategic Leader (SL) certification recognizes the value of ITIL, not just for IT operations but for all digitally-enabled services. Becoming an ITIL 4 Strategic Leader demonstrates that you clearly understand how IT influences and directs business strategy.
Master Level
To achieve the ITIL Master certification, you must be able to explain how you have selected and applied a range of knowledge, principles, methods, and techniques from ITIL and supporting management techniques to achieve desired business outcomes in one or more practical assignments.
Will my ITIL v4 certification expire?
All ITIL v4 certifications are valid for life and will not expire.
However, if AXELOS chooses to release ITIL v5 in the future, current ITIL v4 certification holders will likely be expected to retrain to improve their skills and understanding of ITSM with the latest in IT best-practices.
Are ITILv3 certifications still recognised?
ITIL 4 was published by AXELOS in February 2019. ITIL 4 embraces the latest trends in technologies and service management and provides a flexible basis to support organisations as they undergo digital transformation and integrate digital technology into all areas of their business.
Following the launch of ITIL 4, AXELOS decided to discontinue the previous version, ITIL v3, by the end of 2021.
While ITIL v3 certification holders can still advertise their status as ITIL v3 qualified, AXELOS has encouraged all ITIL practitioners to transition to the new ITIL v4 framework. You can do this through the ITIL transition model if you are currently studying ITIL v3 modules or already hold advanced ITIL v3 certifications.
ITIL Foundation certification is a mandatory requirement for more intermediate and advanced ITIL qualifications.
Regardless of whether you are aiming for ITIL Managing Professional (MP) certification or ITIL Strategic Leader (SL) certification, you must get your ITIL Foundation certification first.
