About PRINCE2 certification

PRINCE2 is a globally recognized project management method used across both private and public sectors. PRINCE2 7th edition is now released, and now form the content for accredited PRINCE2 training and certification.

PRINCE2 is a must-have certification for many jobs in the UK, not just for project managers. There are more people certified in PRINCE2 than any other project management certification, and around two million people have gained PRINCE2 certification.

PRINCE2 certification is available at Foundation and Practitioner levels by choosing either an instructor-led classroom course, or a self-paced online course. In addition, there are two PRINCE2 Agile certifications which are useful for those working in agile environments.

Investing in PRINCE2 certification can greatly enhance your career opportunities globally. Having PRINCE2 after your name, or on your CV is great, but choosing the right certification level and study approach is vital, and this depends on your career goals and circumstances.

PRINCE2 Foundation certification

PRINCE2 Foundation certification is available by studying either an instructor-led classroom course or self-paced online course and passing the PRINCE2 Foundation exam included in the course.

Target audience

Foundation-level PRINCE2 certification is ideal if you work on or would like to begin working on projects, and if you are new to project management and/or PRINCE2.

Foundation-level PRINCE2 certification tests your understanding of the PRINCE2 methodology, terminology, principles, practices, and processes. This certification shows you can act as an informed member of a project team which uses PRINCE2.

This certification is useful if you don’t have a project management experience but want to learn about project management in ways which complements your existing knowledge.

PRINCE2 Foundation exam

PRINCE2 Foundation certification requires you to pass the 1-hour exam. The UK national average pass rate for this exam is 97%. Knowledge Train’s students consistently achieve over 99% pass rates. Click to read how we achieve such good exam results.

There are no prerequisites for taking this exam, but this certification is a prerequisite for obtaining the higher-level PRINCE2 Practitioner certification.

Certification requirements

  • Exam duration: 60-minutes.
  • Questions: Multiple-choice.
  • Style: Closed book.
  • Pass mark: 60% (36 out of 60).

With dedicated study, you can achieve this certification within two days, or longer if studying at home.

PRINCE2 Practitioner certification

PRINCE2 Practitioner certification is also available either by studying an instructor-led classroom course or by taking a self-paced online course and passing the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam included in the course.

PRINCE2 Practitioner certification is ideal if you already hold the PRINCE2 Foundation certification, or one of the other prerequisites listed below.

Target audience

PRINCE2 Practitioner certification is especially sought by UK employers when hiring staff, not just project managers. PRINCE2 Practitioner certification builds upon your Foundation level knowledge and shows that you would be capable of starting and managing projects using the PRINCE2 methodology, under appropriate guidance.

PRINCE2 Practitioner certification looks great on your CV and is helpful if you are involved in project-based work. It is also useful if you are looking to gain new skills to use at work or are looking to move into a project manager role. In fact, PRINCE2 is so popular amongst UK employers that you will often see it is a requirement for many job roles unrelated to project management.

Programme managers holding certifications such as MSP (Managing Successful Programmes) often gain PRINCE2 certification to complement their existing programme management certification.

PRINCE2 Practitioner exam

PRINCE2 Practitioner certification requires you to pass the 2.5-hour exam. The UK national average pass rate for this exam is 73%. For Knowledge Train’s students, a pass rate of 83% for this exam has been achieved for almost 10 years.

Registered PRINCE2 Practitioner status

After gaining PRINCE2 Practitioner certification you become a registered PRINCE2 Practitioner for 5 years and you add this title onto your CV and business card. After 3 years, you can renew your Practitioner status.

Certification requirements

  • Exam duration: 150-minutes.
  • Questions: Objective-style.
  • Style: Open book.
  • Pass mark: 60% (42 out of 70).

With dedicated study, you can achieve this certification within two days, or longer if studying at home.

Certification prerequisites

To sit the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam you must already hold any one of the following certifications:

  • PRINCE2 Foundation or Practitioner certification (6th edition)
  • PMI® Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)®
  • PMI® Project Management Professional (PMP)®
  • IPMA® Level A, B, C, or D (the mark IPMA® is a registered trademark of IPMA in Switzerland and other countries).

In the United Kingdom the Association for Project Management (APM) Project Management Qualification (PMQ) certificate is the IPMA Level D certification. Out of date certifications do not qualify.

PRINCE2 Agile

In 2015, AXELOS introduced the PRINCE2 Agile guidance and certification. It outlines the integration of PRINCE2’s governance with popular Agile methods like Scrum. PRINCE2 Agile certification is offered at both Foundation and Practitioner levels.

Benefits of PRINCE2 certification

There are many important benefits of PRINCE2 certification for an individual and this video explains them.

For organisations too, adopting PRINCE2 as their project management method can also bring numerous benefits. Read about the benefits of PRINCE2 certification in this article.

How to get PRINCE2 certified

You can get PRINCE2 certified in one of three ways:

    1. Instructor-led training

Prepare for your PRINCE2 certification with the help of an experienced trainer who coaches you through in-person training sessions. Instructor-led PRINCE2 training offers direct interaction with trainers and fellow students and either takes place in a physical classroom or virtual classroom.

    2. Self-paced online training

You prepare for your PRINCE2 certification by studying at your own pace. You require an internet-enabled device with audio features. PRINCE2 online courses are usually cheaper than virtual classroom training.

    3. Self-study

This type of learning is the cheapest way to become certified in PRINCE2. This is a viable option if you are highly self-motivated and if the other options are too expensive. You will need to buy the PRINCE2 exam, but a digital copy of the PRINCE2 manual is included with the Foundation exam.
