FAQs

Do I need any previous experience or prerequisites to study the AgilePM Foundation course?

No prerequisites are required to study the AgilePM Foundation course – anyone can enrol regardless of their background or prior experience with agile methods.

The AgilePM Foundation qualification, accredited by APMG International, is designed as an entry-level certification. There are no formal experience requirements, no minimum qualifications, and no prior knowledge of agile project management is assumed.

The course is particularly well suited to:

  • New or aspiring agile project managers looking for a structured grounding
  • Project team members, business analysts, product owners, and Scrum Masters
  • Professionals moving from traditional, plan-driven delivery to agile approaches
  • Anyone planning to continue to the AgilePM Practitioner level, which does require the Foundation certificate as a prerequisite

The course introduces all core concepts from the ground up, including the Agile Manifesto, AgilePM principles, roles and responsibilities, the AgilePM project lifecycle, MoSCoW prioritisation, and the basics of Scrum. No assumed knowledge is needed before you begin.

The AgilePM Foundation certificate is prerequisite for the higher AgilePM Practitioner exam.

Should I choose instructor-led or self-paced AgilePM Foundation training?

The right format depends on how you learn best and how much flexibility you need – both options include the AgilePM Foundation exam and lead to the same APMG-accredited qualification.

Choose instructor-led training if you:

  • Prefer live interaction and real-time answers from an accredited AgilePM trainer
  • Want to complete your training and exam quickly – the instructor-led course runs over 3 days on fixed scheduled dates
  • Benefit from structured group sessions, live Q&A, and accountability to a timetable
  • Are new to AgilePM and want guided support through the material

Choose self-paced e-learning if you:

  • Need to fit study around work or other commitments – the self-paced course takes approximately 23 hours and can be started at any time
  • Prefer to work through interactive online modules at your own speed
  • Want 12-month access to revisit content before the exam
  • Are comfortable self-directing your learning with tutor support available by email and phone

Both formats include the official AgilePM manual, mock exams, and the AgilePM Foundation exam. Tutor support is available on both options. If your priority is completing the qualification as fast as possible, instructor-led training offers the most direct route. If you need maximum schedule flexibility, self-paced is the stronger choice.

How do I take the AgilePM Foundation exam?

The AgilePM Foundation exam is taken online and is included as part of the AgilePM Foundation course from Knowledge Train.

Here is what to expect from the exam process:

  • Format: 50 multiple-choice questions (objective test)
  • Pass mark: 60% – you need to answer 30 out of 50 questions correctly
  • Duration: 40 minutes
  • Closed book: no reference materials are permitted during the exam
  • Prerequisites: none – there is no prior qualification required to sit the AgilePM Foundation exam
  • Results: provisional results are available on the same day

The exam is accredited by APMG International, the awarding body for AgilePM. To access the exam, candidates register for a free APMG Candidate Portal account, where they can book the exam, view results, download their certificate, and claim a digital badge via Credly. Official results and a marks breakdown are typically published in the Candidate Portal within two working days.

The AgilePM Foundation certificate is valid for life and does not expire. If you want to progress further, the AgilePM Practitioner qualification is the natural next step and requires the Foundation certificate as a prerequisite.

When will I receive my AgilePM Foundation exam results and certificate?

You will receive a provisional result immediately after completing the AgilePM Foundation exam, with your official result and certificate available within a short time via the APMG Candidate Portal.

Here is what to expect at each stage:

  • Provisional result: Available immediately after most online exams, including the AgilePM Foundation exam, so you will know on the day whether you have passed.
  • Official result and marks breakdown: Published in your APMG Candidate Portal account, typically within two working days of sitting the exam.
  • Digital certificate and badge: Once the official result is issued, you can claim your electronic AgilePM Foundation certificate and a digital badge through the APMG Candidate Portal. The badge is hosted via Credly, a third-party digital credentialling platform, and is usually available within two business days of the result being confirmed.

Every candidate needs a free APMG Candidate Portal account to book the exam, view results, download their certificate, and access their Credly badge. If you are taking the AgilePM Foundation course with Knowledge Train, exam access is included in the course fee.

It is worth noting that the AgilePM Foundation certificate is valid for life and does not expire, so there is no renewal requirement once you have passed.

Is AgilePM Foundation hard to pass?

The AgilePM Foundation exam is considered accessible for most learners who complete the training, with Knowledge Train reporting a 99% pass rate across its candidates.

The exam itself is a closed-book, multiple-choice test with 50 questions, a pass mark of 60% (30 out of 50), and a 40-minute time limit. There are no prerequisites, so no prior agile experience is required to sit it. Results are available the same day.

The main factors that determine difficulty are:

  • Familiarity with AgilePM concepts – topics include the AgilePM lifecycle, roles and responsibilities, MoSCoW prioritisation, requirements management, risk, and governance. These are covered in full during the training.
  • Preparation approach – both the instructor-led (3-day) and self-paced (23-hour) courses include the official AgilePM manual, mock exams, and practice tests, which are the most effective way to prepare.
  • Background – learners with project management or agile team experience typically find the concepts intuitive, though the course is designed to be equally accessible to those new to agile delivery.

The Foundation level tests knowledge and understanding rather than the ability to apply AgilePM in complex scenarios – that is covered at the AgilePM Practitioner level. Candidates who engage with the course materials and complete the mock exams are well placed to pass first time.

Can I retake the AgilePM Foundation exam if I fail, and does it cost extra?

Yes, you can retake the AgilePM Foundation exam if you do not pass first time, but an additional exam resit fee applies.

The AgilePM Foundation exam is sat online and results are available on the same day. If you do not achieve the pass mark of 30 out of 50 questions (60%), you are eligible to resit the exam. However, the resit is not included in the course fee – you will need to pay a separate resit fee to book another attempt.

A few practical points worth knowing before you sit the exam:

  • Pass mark: 30 out of 50 questions (60%)
  • Format: 50 multiple-choice questions, closed book, 40 minutes
  • Results: Provisional results are available immediately after the exam; official results and a marks breakdown are published in the APMG Candidate Portal, typically within two working days
  • Resit cost: An additional fee is charged for any resit attempt
  • No prerequisites: There are no entry requirements for the AgilePM Foundation exam

To reduce the risk of needing a resit, the AgilePM Foundation course from Knowledge Train includes mock exams and practice tests as part of the all-inclusive package, giving you the opportunity to identify gaps before sitting the real exam.
