What is the key to a successful project management? There are many ways to fail in this undertaking; however, if a project manager is able to determine the fundamentals of a successful project management, he or she will surely come out triumphant. Besides knowing the phases of a project management cycle which are Initiation, Project Planning, Execution and Closing and each phase’s definitions and purpose, a project manager, the leader in the project, should know the following fundamentals.

Although a project is a collaboration of different people with their own technical skills and specialties, the project manager is the one who has the power to bring everyone together to work in one cohesive environment whose main goal is to accomplish and deliver the project according to the specifications of the client. From the project planning period, the project manager has been in charge and so to ensure success he must be able to have the fundamental skills listed below:

A project manager must be a leader. At the very beginning of the project, the project manager should be able to establish the scope of the project, integrate the client’s objectives and goals into a plan, build a team, inspire his team, delegate tasks, lead by example and be able to manage the team to deliver the results. Outstanding communication skills are a definite must as the project manager is the voice and heart of the project. He has that sole power to connect the client to the plan, the plan to the team, and the team to the resources. Conveying the objectives properly, allowing for open communication to flow will provide a venue for an easy and non-risky necessary adjustment.

Once the objectives are relayed to the team, project planning comes next. A project manager should have the capacity and skill to create a plan that is in accordance to the goals and objectives. The ability to discern what part of the scope and definitions of project is important and what is not is a skill developed over time, experience and instinct. A project manager should also listen to the contribution of the team whose technical expertise is something that must always be considered.

Another fundamental skill is the organizational skill. The project manager should be able to organize all the cost, resources and equipments, people, schedule and processes. This undoubtedly would take a whole lot of work and concentration and the project manager should be well-organized to be able to document all of this. The use of project management software that will provide project tracking applications that will help in scheduling timelines and events, budgeting, monitoring and controlling, communication and process documentation should be used. Not only will this help in organizing all the details, processes and documents, it can also be used as another resource for the client and the team to know what is going on, what should be improved and what are no longer a necessity. If one decides to use this as one his tools, then make sure to list down what are applications that it should have that will meet your specific needs.

Last but not the least, a project manager should have the skill to control and monitor the entirety of the project. This means that the project manager should always be aware of the state of the project to avoid any fatal mistakes. Any changes, alteration in the methods and budget, conflicts within the team, client concerns, and a project manager should be able to skillfully manage and consequently deal with. A project manager who does project tracking will constantly be given an idea of the progression of a project.
