FAQs

Do I need any previous experience or prerequisites to study the PRINCE2 Practitioner course?

Yes – to sit the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam, you must already hold a qualifying project management certification; the course is not open to complete beginners.

PeopleCert, the accreditation body for PRINCE2, requires candidates to hold one of the following before taking the Practitioner exam:

  • PRINCE2 Foundation (Version 7, 6th Edition, or 5th Edition)
  • APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or Project Professional Qualification (PPQ)
  • PMI Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) or Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • IPMA Levels A, B, C, or D
  • Junior Project Management Professional (CSPM-2) or Medium Project Management Professional (CSPM-3)

The most common route is to hold PRINCE2 Foundation. If you do not yet have that qualification, Knowledge Train offers a combined PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner course, which covers both levels and includes both exams – making it suitable for those starting from scratch.

There are no formal requirements around years of work experience or academic background. However, PRINCE2 Practitioner is designed for practising project managers and team leaders who want to demonstrate they can apply the PRINCE2 method in real project environments, not just understand it in theory. Candidates who already manage or work closely on projects will typically find the course content easier to contextualise.

Should I choose instructor-led or self-paced PRINCE2 Practitioner training?

The right format depends on how you learn best, how quickly you need to qualify, and how much flexibility you require.

Instructor-led PRINCE2 Practitioner training runs over two live days, either in a classroom or online, with an accredited trainer. It suits learners who benefit from structured guidance, real-time Q&A, and a fixed schedule that keeps them on track. If you prefer to work through the material with expert support and want to complete training and sit the exam within a defined timeframe, instructor-led is likely the better choice.

Self-paced PRINCE2 Practitioner training gives you 15 hours of interactive online modules with 12 months of access, so you can study around work and other commitments. Tutor and technical support is available by email and phone. This format suits professionals with unpredictable schedules or those who prefer to revisit content at their own speed.

Both formats include:

  • The PRINCE2 Practitioner exam with a free resit
  • Mock exams and practice materials
  • One year of PeopleCert Plus membership (worth £120+)
  • One year of post-course resource access

The key practical difference is pace and interaction. If accountability and live discussion help you absorb complex topics such as tailoring PRINCE2 processes and management products, choose instructor-led. If independence and flexibility matter more, self-paced is a strong alternative.

How do I take the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam?

The PRINCE2 Practitioner exam is taken online through your PeopleCert account, and an exam voucher is included when you book a PRINCE2 Practitioner course with Knowledge Train.

Exam format at a glance

  • Format: Multiple choice (objective test)
  • Questions: 70
  • Pass mark: 60% (42 out of 70 correct)
  • Duration: 150 minutes
  • Open book: Yes – you may refer to permitted materials during the exam
  • Results: Issued within 2 working days
  • Access: Online via your PeopleCert account

Prerequisites

You must hold an approved project management qualification before sitting the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam. Accepted prerequisites include PRINCE2 Foundation (Version 5, 6, or 7), APM PMQ or PPQ, PMI CAPM or PMP, and IPMA Levels A to D, among others. PeopleCert verifies that you hold a valid prerequisite before releasing your Practitioner exam results.

Free resit included

All Knowledge Train PRINCE2 Practitioner courses include a free exam resit (known as Take2 through PeopleCert), so if you do not pass first time you have one additional attempt at no extra cost. The resit must be used within six months of your original exam date.

Once you pass, your PRINCE2 Practitioner certificate and digital badge are issued via your PeopleCert account. The certification is valid for three years and must then be renewed.

When will I receive my PRINCE2 Practitioner exam results and certificate?

PRINCE2 Practitioner exam results are typically available within 2 working days of sitting the exam, after which your certificate and digital badge are issued through your PeopleCert account.

There is a short additional step unique to the Practitioner level: PeopleCert verifies that each candidate holds a valid prerequisite qualification before releasing Practitioner results. This means your results will not appear instantly after the exam ends, even if you complete it online.

Once your results are confirmed and the prerequisite check is complete, you can access the following through your PeopleCert membership account:

  • Your official PRINCE2 Practitioner certificate
  • A digital badge you can share on LinkedIn or other professional profiles
  • A record of your certification on PeopleCert’s Candidate Verification Service

It is worth noting that the PRINCE2 Practitioner certification is valid for three years from the date of award and will need to be renewed at that point. Renewal options include logging CPD points (available to PeopleCert Plus members), retaking the Practitioner exam, or passing another certification within the same PeopleCert Product Portfolio, such as MSP or MoR.

Both instructor-led and self-paced courses from Knowledge Train include the Practitioner exam as part of an all-inclusive package, along with a free resit and a one-year PeopleCert Plus membership.

Is PRINCE2 Practitioner hard to pass?

PRINCE2 Practitioner is a challenging exam, but it is very passable with the right preparation – Knowledge Train reports an 83% pass rate among its learners.

The exam is more demanding than PRINCE2 Foundation because it tests your ability to apply and tailor the PRINCE2 method to realistic project scenarios, not just recall terminology. The format reflects this:

  • 70 scenario-based, multiple choice questions
  • 150 minutes to complete
  • Pass mark of 60% (42 out of 70 correct answers)
  • Open book – you may refer to your PRINCE2 manual during the exam

The open book format is a genuine advantage, but it rewards those who understand the method well enough to locate and apply information quickly under timed conditions. Candidates who treat the manual as a substitute for preparation typically struggle.

Preparation makes a significant difference. The Knowledge Train PRINCE2 Practitioner course includes two official sample exams with feedback, so you can practise applying PRINCE2 to realistic scenarios before exam day. The exam and a free resit are both included, and every learner receives a one-year PeopleCert Plus membership, which provides access to additional mock exams and practice resources.

Candidates who already hold PRINCE2 Foundation and have some project management experience tend to find the step up manageable with structured study.

Can I retake the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam if I fail, and does it cost extra?

A free resit is included with every PRINCE2 Practitioner course at Knowledge Train, so if you fail your first attempt you can resit without paying an additional exam fee.

The resit is provided through PeopleCert’s Take2 scheme, which grants one additional attempt if the first attempt is unsuccessful. There are two ways Take2 is available to PRINCE2 Practitioner candidates:

  • Included in your course package – Knowledge Train includes a free resit with both instructor-led and self-paced PRINCE2 Practitioner courses, so you are covered from the outset.
  • Via PeopleCert Plus membership – all course packages also include a one-year PeopleCert Plus membership, which itself includes a free Take2 as a membership benefit.

A Take2 resit must be used within six months of your original exam date and is tied to the specific exam it was granted for. It cannot be transferred to a different exam or used after the six-month window has closed.

If you are concerned about exam readiness, the PRINCE2 Practitioner course at Knowledge Train includes two official sample exams with feedback, plus tutor support, to help you prepare thoroughly before sitting. Knowledge Train reports an 83% pass rate for the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam, which suggests most candidates pass at the first attempt.
