MSP Practitioner

Best for: Existing MSP Foundation holders who want to demonstrate they can apply the MSP framework on real programmes. This level suits programme managers, business change managers, transformation leads, and senior project managers stepping up. The prerequisite is an MSP Foundation certificate (or MSP 4th edition Practitioner). The course runs over 2 days (or 22 hours self-paced), with a 150-minute open-book exam.

MSP combined (Foundation and Practitioner)

Best for: Learners starting from scratch who want to achieve both certificates in one structured programme. Covering 4 days (or 36 hours self-paced), the combined route includes both exams and the official digital manual, and avoids any study gap between levels.

• If you have no MSP certification and want both qualifications efficiently, choose the combined route.
• If you are new to MSP and want to test the waters first, start with Foundation.
• If you already hold MSP Foundation, go straight to Practitioner.

All three options include the MSP exam, a free resit, and a one-year PeopleCert Plus membership, which also allows certification renewal through CPD points rather than a further exam.

Yes – holding the MSP Foundation certificate is a formal prerequisite for enrolling on the MSP Practitioner course and sitting the MSP Practitioner exam.

PeopleCert, the accreditation body that owns and awards MSP qualifications, requires candidates to hold either the MSP 5th edition Foundation certificate or the MSP 4th edition Practitioner certificate before they can register for the MSP Practitioner exam. This option suits learners who want to move from core concepts to applied practice without a gap between study periods and without needing to hold Foundation in advance.

If you already hold a current MSP Foundation certificate from a previous course, you can enrol directly on the MSP Practitioner course without repeating Foundation-level training.

MSP Practitioner exam

• Duration: 150 minutes (2.5 hours)
• Pass mark: 60% (42 out of 70 correct)
• Prerequisites: MSP 5th edition Foundation or MSP 4th edition Practitioner
• Results: Within 2 business days

The Practitioner exam is longer and more demanding. It is open book, meaning you can refer to the official MSP manual during the exam – but the questions require you to apply, analyse, and tailor the method rather than simply recall it. You must hold an MSP Foundation certificate (or the equivalent 4th edition Practitioner) before sitting the Practitioner exam.

Both exams are taken online and are accredited by PeopleCert. Each course includes a free resit (Take2) through PeopleCert Plus membership, which is included with Knowledge Train’s MSP training packages.

Both the MSP Foundation and MSP Practitioner certifications are valid for three years from the date of passing, after which renewal is required to keep each certification current.

Renewal is a currency requirement – it updates the status of your certification in your PeopleCert account rather than overwriting your original pass record. A certification that lapses is not revoked; it remains listed on PeopleCert’s Successful Candidates Register, but the record is flagged as outdated.

How to renew your MSP certification

PeopleCert offers three renewal routes:

• CPD points (PeopleCert Plus members only) – log 20 CPD points per year for three consecutive years through everyday professional activity, with no further exam needed.
• Retake the same exam – passing the MSP Foundation or Practitioner exam again resets the three-year renewal date.
• Pass another certification in the same PeopleCert Product Portfolio – MSP sits within the PRINCE2 Product Portfolio alongside PRINCE2, PRINCE2 Agile, MoP, MoR, and P3O. Passing any of these before your renewal date automatically renews all certifications you hold within that portfolio.

The CPD route is only available to PeopleCert Plus members, which is the paid membership tier.
