ITIL courses frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Should I do the ITIL Foundation course, or an ITIL 4 Strategist or Specialist course?
Start with ITIL 4 Foundation if you have no existing ITIL qualification, because it is the required prerequisite for all ITIL 4 Specialist and Strategist courses.
The three advanced courses – ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support (CDS), ITIL 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV), and ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) – all require a confirmed ITIL 4 Foundation certificate before you can sit their exams. If you already hold ITIL 4 Foundation, you can move directly to whichever advanced course suits your role.
Choosing the right advanced course
- ITIL 4 Specialist: CDS – best for service desk, operations, support, and DevOps professionals who create, deliver, and support IT services day to day.
- ITIL 4 Specialist: DSV – best for service managers, customer success, and account management professionals responsible for customer journeys and stakeholder value.
- ITIL 4 Strategist: DPI – best for managers, team leads, and improvement leaders who direct governance, planning, and continual improvement across IT services.
All three advanced courses are three-day, instructor-led programmes accredited by PeopleCert, and each contributes towards the ITIL 4 Managing Professional designation. If you are new to ITIL, the practical starting point is ITIL 4 Foundation, which has no prerequisites and is available as both an instructor-led and self-paced course.
Do I need ITIL Foundation before I can take an ITIL 4 Strategist or Specialist course?
Yes – ITIL 4 Foundation is a formal prerequisite for all ITIL 4 Specialist and Strategist courses, and you must hold this qualification before enrolling on any of the following:
- ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support (CDS) – aimed at service desk, operations, and support professionals
- ITIL 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV) – aimed at service managers, customer success, and account management professionals
- ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) – aimed at managers, team leads, and improvement leaders
The ITIL 4 Foundation course itself has no prerequisites, making it the natural starting point for anyone new to the ITIL framework. It covers core concepts including the service value system, guiding principles, and key ITIL 4 practices – the knowledge that the Specialist and Strategist modules build directly upon.
If you already hold ITIL 4 Foundation, you can move straight to any of the higher-level modules. Each Specialist and Strategist course runs over three days and includes the relevant exam. All three modules contribute towards the ITIL 4 Managing Professional designation, so many practitioners take them in sequence as part of a planned career pathway.
If you are unsure whether you already meet the Foundation prerequisite, your existing ITIL 4 Foundation certificate or your PeopleCert account record will confirm your qualification status.
What's the difference between the ITIL exams for Foundation and the ITIL 4 Strategist or Specialist courses?
The ITIL 4 Foundation exam is shorter and has a lower pass mark than the exams for the ITIL 4 Specialist and Strategist courses, reflecting the difference in depth between an introductory and a practitioner-level qualification.
Here is a direct comparison of the key exam details:
- ITIL 4 Foundation: 40 multiple choice questions, 60 minutes, pass mark of 65% (26 out of 40), closed book, no prerequisites
- ITIL 4 Specialist – Create, Deliver and Support (CDS): 40 multiple choice questions, 90 minutes, pass mark of 70% (28 out of 40), closed book, requires ITIL 4 Foundation
- ITIL 4 Specialist – Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV): 40 multiple choice questions, 90 minutes, pass mark of 70% (28 out of 40), closed book, requires ITIL 4 Foundation
- ITIL 4 Strategist – Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI): 40 multiple choice questions, 90 minutes, pass mark of 70% (28 out of 40), closed book, requires ITIL 4 Foundation
All exams are taken online and results are confirmed on the same day. The number of questions is the same across all four exams, but the Specialist and Strategist exams allow 30 more minutes and require a higher pass mark. The ITIL 4 Foundation certificate is a prerequisite for all three advanced courses, so candidates must hold Foundation before sitting any Specialist or Strategist exam. All exams are accredited and administered by PeopleCert.
How long are ITIL certificates valid for, and do I need to renew?
All ITIL certifications issued by PeopleCert are valid for three years and must be renewed to remain current.
After three years, a certificate that has not been renewed is not revoked – it remains listed on PeopleCert’s Successful Candidates Register and can still be verified – but the record is flagged as outdated. For most employers and professional contexts, holding a current certification is expected, so renewal matters in practice.
How to renew an ITIL certification
PeopleCert offers three renewal routes:
- CPD points (PeopleCert Plus members only) – log 20 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points per year for three consecutive years. No further exam is required. CPD activity can come from everyday professional work.
- Retake the same exam – passing the same ITIL certification exam again resets the three-year renewal date.
- Pass another certification in the ITIL Product Portfolio – achieving any ITIL certification renews all other ITIL certifications you already hold within the same PeopleCert Product Portfolio.
PeopleCert Plus membership and renewal
The CPD renewal route is only available to PeopleCert Plus members, which is a paid membership tier. ITIL 4 Foundation courses at Knowledge Train include a one-year PeopleCert Plus membership, giving you access to the CPD route during that period, along with mock exams, masterclasses, and a free exam resit (Take2).
How long are the ITIL Foundation and the ITIL 4 Strategist and Specialist courses, and how much study time do they require?
The ITIL 4 Foundation course takes either 3 days (instructor-led) or 16 hours (self-paced), while the ITIL 4 Specialist and Strategist courses each run for 3 days of instructor-led training.
Here is a quick summary of the study time for each course available through Knowledge Train:
- ITIL 4 Foundation – 3 days via instructor-led live online training, or approximately 16 hours via self-paced interactive e-learning. The self-paced option includes 12 months of access, so you can spread study across weeks if needed.
- ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support (CDS) – 3 days, instructor-led only.
- ITIL 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV) – 3 days, instructor-led only.
- ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) – 3 days, instructor-led only.
The Specialist and Strategist courses are only available as instructor-led training with fixed scheduled dates, which suits learners who benefit from structured delivery and live interaction with an accredited trainer. All three require ITIL 4 Foundation as a prerequisite before enrolling.
If flexibility is your priority at Foundation level, the self-paced format lets you study around work commitments. If you prefer a guided, peer-supported experience, the 3-day instructor-led option covers the same content with live Q&A sessions.
Can I take an ITIL 4 Strategist and Specialist course without doing ITIL Foundation?
No – ITIL 4 Foundation is a mandatory prerequisite for all ITIL 4 Specialist and Strategist courses. PeopleCert, the accreditation body for ITIL certifications, requires candidates to hold the ITIL 4 Foundation Certificate before they can register for any of the advanced modules.
This applies to all three courses available beyond Foundation level:
- ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support (CDS) – requires ITIL 4 Foundation
- ITIL 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV) – requires ITIL 4 Foundation
- ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) – requires ITIL 4 Foundation
The prerequisite exists because the advanced modules build directly on the concepts introduced at Foundation level, including the service value system, value chain activities, guiding principles, and core ITIL 4 practices. Attempting a Specialist or Strategist course without that grounding would make the content significantly harder to follow.
If you do not yet hold ITIL 4 Foundation, the practical starting point is to complete the ITIL 4 Foundation course and exam first. The Foundation course is available as a three-day instructor-led programme or as a 16-hour self-paced online option, so it is possible to fit it around work commitments before progressing to the advanced modules.
What is the difference between ITIL 4 and DevOps, and can they be used together?
ITIL and DevOps are complementary frameworks that address different aspects of IT service delivery, and many organisations use both together.
ITIL 4 is a framework for IT service management (ITSM). It provides structured guidance on how to design, deliver, manage, and continually improve IT services. ITIL focuses on governance, service value, practices such as incident management and change enablement, and aligning IT services with business needs. It is accredited and examined by PeopleCert.
DevOps is a cultural and technical movement that emphasises collaboration between software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops). Its primary focus is on shortening delivery cycles, automating deployments, and enabling continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) of software.
The key differences at a glance:
- Scope: ITIL 4 covers the full IT service lifecycle; DevOps focuses primarily on software development and deployment pipelines.
- Focus: ITIL 4 emphasises service governance and value; DevOps emphasises speed, automation, and collaboration.
- Audience: ITIL 4 suits service managers, operations teams, and anyone working in or with IT services; DevOps is most relevant to developers, testers, and operations engineers.
- Relationship: ITIL 4 explicitly incorporates DevOps principles, treating DevOps as a practice that can operate within the ITIL service value system.
In practice, ITIL 4 and DevOps are not in competition. IT professionals often benefit from understanding both frameworks, and PeopleCert offers certifications in both ITIL and DevOps.
Are the ITIL 4 Strategist or Specialist courses worth it if I already have ITIL Foundation?
Yes – the ITIL 4 Specialist and Strategist courses are a worthwhile next step for most ITIL 4 Foundation holders, because they move from concept to practical application in specific professional contexts.
ITIL 4 Foundation gives you a grounding in terminology, the service value system, and guiding principles. The advanced modules build on that base and are each aimed at a different role:
- ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support (CDS) – suited to service desk, operations, and DevOps professionals who design and run end-to-end service delivery. It covers value stream design, team structures, automation, incident and problem management.
- ITIL 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV) – suited to service managers, customer success, and CX professionals responsible for customer journeys, demand shaping, and value co-creation.
- ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) – suited to managers, process owners, and improvement leaders who govern and shape IT services. It covers governance, risk, continual improvement models, and change communication.
Each course runs over three days, includes the exam and a free resit, and requires ITIL 4 Foundation as a prerequisite. All three modules also contribute towards the ITIL 4 Managing Professional designation, which makes them a logical progression if career advancement is a goal.
If your role is operational, CDS or DSV is likely the more immediate fit. If your focus is governance and strategic improvement, DPI is the natural choice.
