Passing the ITIL Foundation exam proves to employers you have a basic understanding of the ITIL framework.
ITIL Foundation is the most basic ITIL certificate, and a pre-requisite to achieving more advanced ITIL certificates. Passing the ITIL Foundation exam enables you to progress onto ITIL Practitioner, which is a pre-requisite to the ITIL Intermediate certificates and ITIL Expert.
ITIL uses a credit scheme, with each qualification earning you a certain amount of credits. The ITIL Foundation certificate earns you 2 credits; to reach ITIL Expert you'll need to earn 22 credits from the ITIL Practitioner and Intermediate levels .
You can obtain ITIL Foundation certification by doing accredited ITIL Foundation training. This can either be done in-class or online.

The ITIL Foundation exam is a multiple-choice exam. It lasts for 60 minutes and consists of 40 questions. Each multiple-choice question has 4 choices (A, B, C or D) to choose from. To pass, you will need to score 65% (26 marks out of 40). This ITIL exam is closed book, meaning you cannot take the ITIL handbook into the exam with you .
How should I revise for the ITIL Foundation exam?
Accredited ITIL Foundation training should always include sample exams. These are essential when you are revising, as they provide a good idea for the type of questions that'll come up in the real exam. It is also incredibly important that you understand key ITIL terminology. For example, ensure you understand terms such as incident, problem and standard change.
It is best to follow the advice provided on your ITIL Foundation training course. Your trainer or eLearning package will advise on the correct topics to study. You can also read the ITIL syllabus available on the AXELOS website. This lists every topic covered in the ITIL Foundation exam.
How should I approach the ITIL Foundation exam?
Read each question in the ITIL Foundation exam carefully. Check you understand what is being asked. Keywords in each question should give you a clue as to what is being asked. Look out for words like incorrect, best, must, not and could.
Don't spend too long on each question or overthink the answers. If a question has you stumped, leave it and come back to it at the end. It is best to attempt the questions you can do first, rather than wasting too much time on one question
Remember to think in an ITIL way. Don't answer the questions based on what you personally would do. You are being tested on your knowledge of the ITIL framework, not on your personal experience. Finally, go through your answers at the end of the exam to check you've answered everything, and haven't made any mistakes .
