Receiving the all-important PRINCE2 certificate is perhaps the most rewarding part of your course. However, many of our students often have questions about the qualification and how long it is valid for. So, we have compiled a list of common questions and answers here. We hope this article makes everything a bit clearer!
How long does a PRINCE2 qualification last?
PRINCE2 Foundation certificate is issued without an expiry date, however AXELOS may later remove the validity of some certificates. For example, at the beginning of 2018, AXELOS claimed that all the PRINCE2 2005 version Foundation certificates would cease to be valid. Since 2017, all PRINCE2 Practitioner certificates will be valid for 3 years from the issue date.
How long is PRINCE2 Foundation valid for?
As stated above, the PRINCE2 Foundation certificate never expires. It is valid for as long as you keep it. The certificate comes in the form of a PDF e-certificate. Even if you do lose it, you can always order a replacement from the PRINCE2 exam institute which issued it. Also, if you opted for your name to appear on the AXELOS Successful Candidate Register, anyone can search for you and see that you successfully passed the exam.
How long is PRINCE2 Practitioner valid for?
The answer to this question requires a bit of explanation. When you pass the PRINCE2 Practitioner examination you become a Registered PRINCE2 Practitioner. This means that your qualification is registered with the PRINCE2 accreditation body AXELOS.
Since 2017, the PRINCE2 Practitioner certificate is issued with an expiry date and is valid for 3 years from the issue date.
How can I prevent my Registered PRINCE2 Practitioner status from expiring?
In order to renew your Registered PRINCE2 Practitioner status, you have two options. You can either just take the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam again 3 years after you qualify, or you can sign up for AXELOS Membership and renew your status with CPD points.
CPD points are earned through activities completed in your professional life, such as using PRINCE2 at work, mentoring colleagues, participating in training or contributing to online project management communities. If you want to keep your Registered PRINCE2 Practitioner status up-to-date with CPD points, you will need to log at least 20 CPD points to extend your PRINCE2 Practitioner status by 1 year. If you log 20 CPD points per year over 3 years, then your certification will be renewed automatically. This saves you having to sit the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam again.
We strongly advise you to renew your status as a Registered PRINCE2 Practitioner. That’s because by passing the PRINCE2 Re-registration examination, you demonstrate to employers that you have kept your PRINCE2 knowledge up-to-date and are committed to continuing professional development.
Being a Registered PRINCE2 Practitioner can therefore be a valuable asset to your career in today’s competitive project management industry. Your Registered PRINCE2 Practitioner status can be included on your business card. If your registered status has expired though, you would really need to remove the statement from your business card.
