  • Kotter’s eight step model - shows a change road map based upon common errors made by organizations;
  • Senge’s systems thinking model – shows how profound change can be achieved through learning.

Change management complements project management within an organization. Whilst project management delivers products (e.g. systems or processes) to be used within business as usual, the staff impacted by the use of these new products are the subject of change management. Change management requires planning which staff will be impacted by the project's outputs, and ensuring they receive the awareness, leadership, coaching, and training they need to change successfully.

What is change management in an organisation?

Change management in an organization refers to the planning and management of staff impacted by a change initiative, ensuring they receive the awareness, leadership, coaching, and training they need to change successfully. What's a business change manager?

A business change manager often stands alongside project sponsors and project or programme managers. Their role is to identify the individuals or groups impacted by a change initiative, and to plan and manage how those staff receive the awareness, leadership, coaching, and training they need to change successfully. Business change managers are becoming increasingly important inside organizations as businesses realize that successful change initiatives require more than the delivery of products from projects. They also require that impacted staff use those products to ensure the forecasted benefits are realized.

Why is change management important?

Change management is important within an organization because it complements project management initiatives. Whereas project management focuses on delivering products which help improve an organization, such efforts can often fail if the users of such products don't use them, or don't use them correctly. If this happens, the investment in the project can end up being wasted. Change management therefore focuses its efforts on identifying the affected staff and plans how to support their transition to the new way of working.
