AgilePM® is the world’s leading certification in Agile Project Management. Over 80,000 people are certified in AgilePM® worldwide. This article explores everything you need to know about AgilePM® and certification. Read on to find out more!

Can agile project management be used for non-software projects?

Agile project management can be used for any type of project, even non-software projects. Any project which progressively delivers the final product in regular increments can be thought of as agile. Such projects, like any other project require project management best practises. That's because none of the well-known agile development practices (e.g. Scrum) are project management methodologies themselves. Therefore, to manage a marketing project for example, you could use a common project management method such as PRINCE2 or a dedicated agile project management method such as APMG's AgilePM in conjunction with teams utilising agile methods such as Scrum.

Can traditional project management be used with agile?

Absolutely. Agile development methods such as Scrum are aimed at getting self-organising teams to work collaboratively together to deliver progressive releases of the final product in regular increments. Such methods are not designed to manage projects. Nor do they answer wider questions such as 'is the project worthwhile?', 'are the benefits worth the costs and the risks?' or 'if a risk does occur, what would be its impact?'. To answer such questions requires a project management methodology based upon best practices. Therefore, agile projects also require project management best practices if the investment in time and money is not to be wasted.

As an individual there are several benefits of gaining agile project management certification:

  • you can boost your job opportunities because agile project management certification is still relatively rare;
  • you can boost your understanding of how to manage agile projects;
  • you can boost your confidence of how to manage agile projects;
  • you can boost your recognition within your organisation as an expert in agile project management.

What are the benefits of agile project management?

Agile methods are ubiquitous today in the software industry. Other creative industries such as marketing are also starting to adopt agile methods. For organisations adopting agile project management to manage their projects, they can:

  • deliver faster and earlier
  • gain a quicker ROI

  • respond to changing customer's requirements quickly
  • ensure business needs are met.

By utilising project management best practices along with agile development methods, organisations can gain from both the flexibility of agile and the control derived from traditional project management.

AgilePM is based upon DSDM, a founder member of the Agile Alliance and has been around since 2001. DSDM and AgilePM has a broader focus than most Agile approaches such as Scrum because it deals with projects rather than just the development and delivery of a product. The project context requires focusing on the wider business needs and how the solution evolves to meet those needs.

What is agile project management?

Agile project management refers to the management of projects which use one or more agile methods amongst their development teams. Such agile projects deliver progressive releases of a product in regular increments (often called scrums). Agile development methods such as Scrum do not provide many of the features which project management methodologies such as PRINCE2 offer. Things such as risk management and a business-case driven approach to decision-making are missing from agile development methods because they were not designed for managing projects.

Therefore, to manage agile projects requires one of two approaches:

  • Use well-known project management best practices (e.g. PRINCE2) to deliver projects whose teams use agile methods; or,
  • Use a dedicated agile project management method such as APMG's AgilePM.

Whilst popular agile approaches such as Scrum are great at delivering products, they do not provide a broader perspective of why the project is needed and how the project meets business goals.
