Satir change model

Virginia Satir was an author and therapist. Her change model helped people improve their lives by transforming the way they see and express themselves. As change is as much a personal journey as it is an organisational journey, change leaders have recognized the value of Satir’s model for use in change initiatives.

The Satir system

The Satir system is a 5-stage change model that describes each stage’s effects on feelings, thinking, performance, and physiology.

The core concept of the Satir model states that there is always the possibility of improvement from any change process. The Satir change model focuses on tracking rather than influencing performance.

To effectively address the negative issues caused by change, change leaders must use an appropriate change management strategy.

Satir change model stages

There are 5 stages of the Satir change model. These are:

  1. Late Status Quo – Someone receive bad news
  2. Resistance – They wish to return to the status quo and resist change
  3. Chaos – Without a status quo to refer to, they perceive a lack of stability
  4. Integration – They accept the new reality
  5. New Status Quo – They start to make the required changes.
