The PRINCE2 Product Based Planning technique is one of three techniques described in the PRINCE2 manual and forms part of the PRINCE2 courses offered by Knowledge Train.
This technique, if used, is performed during the planning process and is useful for all types of PRINCE2 plans, to help identify the products required and the logical sequence of work. It can be applied to tangible products such as widgets, or intangible products such as culture change.
This technique describes 4 steps:
a: Write a Product Description for the final product i.e. the product that shall be handed over at the end of the project. The Product Description should describe the purpose of the product and its quality criteria e.g. what the product looks like, feels like, behaves like etc.
b: Draw a Product Breakdown Structure diagram which shows all of the products which must be created or obtained in order to help build the final product.
c: Write Product Descriptions for each significant product from the diagram.
d: Draw a Product Flow Diagram which shows the sequence in which all of the products need to be built.
