The PRINCE2 process Initiating a Project (IP) is decribed in detail in the PRINCE2 training courses offered by Knowledge Train.
This process follows Starting up a Project and is concerned with establishing the firm foundations for the project to begin. This involves planning how the customers’ quality expectations are to be met, planning the project (writing a Project Plan), writing the Business Case, performing risk analysis, establishing the project controls to be used on the project and setting up a filing system in order to share documents.
All of the elements which have been worked on during the Starting Up a Project and Initiating a Project processes are then compiled into a Project Initiation Document (PID) which is sent for approval by the Project Board. The Project Manager also performs some further planning in order to produce a detailed Stage Plan for the first stage following the Initiation Stage.
By approving the PID and next Stage Plan the Project Board are authorising the Project Manager to proceed to the next stage. By giving this authorisation the Project Board are committing to providing the necessary expenditure and required resources.
This process is performed by the Project Manager once for a project.
