Management by exception is a key part of PRINCE2 and is covered as part of the PRINCE2 Controls component in our PRINCE2 training courses.
One of the key concepts of controls within PRINCE2 is the concept of ‘management by exception’ (see the Organisation component) whereby having approved a Stage Plan, the Project Manager is allowed to get on with managing the stage and reports progress via regular Highlight Reports. If the situation deviates from the planned tolerances then the Project Manager must escalate the situation to the Project Board in the form of an Exception Report.
