The PRINCE2 process Controlling a Stage(CS) is covered in depth in any PRINCE2 training course offered by Knowledge Train.
This process is where the Project Manager performs the day to day management of the project within the constraints set by the Project Board. The Project Manager needs to ensure that the products are delivered on time and within budget for each stage of the project. The Project Manager also needs to make sure that risks are being monitored and any Project Issues are dealt with.
An important part of the control that the Project Board exerts on a project is through the regular Highlight Report which is written by the Project Manager on a regular basis. This brings to the attention of the Project Board the status of any Project Issues and risks, the progress being made, the products delivered, and budget and schedule impact of any changes which have been implemented.
During this process, the Project Manager needs to assess the progress being made by the different teams via Checkpoint Reports. Project Issues are captured and analysed and decisions made about what to do about them. This inevitably requires the Project Manager to take corrective actions to deal with any Project Issues. Sometimes, if tolerances are threatened then these Project Issues must be escalated to the Project Board in the form of an Exception Report.
This process is performed by the Project Manager once for each stage following the Initiation Stage.
