Well, it’s finally happened. After 2 years in the making, PRINCE2 2009 has finally been released today by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) in London.
The project to enhance the method has been fairly immense. Over 170 organisations have participated in the public consultation, 13 organisations have been involved in piloting the new method and 86 people have been involved in quality reviews, generating over 7,000 comments.
Two new manuals have been released. Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 describes the method from the perspective of a project manager, whilst Directing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 is written from the Executive and Project Board perspective. These new manuals are now easier to read than the previous manual, which to be honest was a mess - contradictory, inconsistent, unclear, repetitive and dull. These new manuals should make it easier for students to learn and study PRINCE2.
So, what’s changed from the previous version of PRINCE2? The new version is less prescriptive and has placed a greater emphasis on a number of key elements including; learning lessons, the Business Case and benefits, and quality of products. The new version has less management products which should make it easier to tailor to different projects. The recommended ways of dealing with issues and changes has been improved. Last but not least, terminology has been made more consistent both within the method and has been aligned with other best practice methods such as Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) and ITIL.
Since the new version of PRINCE2 has now been formally released, I am able to divulge some of the details of the chagnes which have been made to the new version. I shall therefore be writing some further details of these changes in my next few posts.
