Understanding PRINCE2 project management

What is PRINCE2?

PRINCE2 is a project management methodology. It provides structure and guidelines for the organisation of projects from start to finish. It includes defined roles, techniques, processes and documents that enable complete control over every aspect of project management.

The PRINCE2 official website defines its methodology in the following way:

"Structured project management means managing the project in a logical, organised way, following defined steps. A structured project management method like PRINCE2 is the written description of this logical, organised approach"

PRINCE2 projects are initiated with 6 simple questions that form the core elements of the project management method:

  • What are we trying to achieve?
  • When do we start?
  • What do we need?
  • Can we do it alone, or do we need help?
  • How long will it take?
  • How much will it cost?

By establishing the answers to these questions, PRINCE2 project managers are able to set the project limits, objectives and scope in the project plan. PRINCE2 best practices, processes and techniques guide the realisation of this plan into the achievement of the initial goals.

Who uses PRINCE2?

Anybody can use PRINCE2. The method itself is not under copyright, and textbooks and courses are readily available.

The original PRINCE method was developed in 1989 for the CCTA (Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency, since renamed the Office of Government Commerce). It was based on PROMPT, a methodology invented by Simpact Systems in 1975.

PRINCE2 was published in 1996, and is now the standard method in government offices. It is also the most popular method across public and private sector organisations in the UK, and has also been adopted by many overseas businesses: most recently the PRINCE2 methodology and qualifications have found their way into China.

Do I need to take an exam?

PRINCE2 methods can be used without taking any qualification, but formal PRINCE2 Foundation certificate demonstrates awareness of PRINCE2 methodology and the ability to effectively manage projects. In fact, many UK organisations now require PRINCE2 certification in their project staff. There are two levels of PRINCE2 certification: PRINCE2 Foundation and PRINCE2 Practitioner.

PRINCE2 Foundation is considered appropriate for individuals working with a project management team, while PRINCE2 Practitioner is aimed at actual (or aspiring) project managers.
